Lathe Cutting Services

 

  • S&H Rubber, is a manufacturer of precision lathe cut seals, gaskets and tubes. We custom manufacture these products to your exact requirements in a wide variety of polymers and sizes. A lathe cut seal is also known as a “square cut” or “rectangular cross-section” seal. Our components are manufactured from a cylindrical rubber tube made from premium sealing grade materials. Our processes are closely controlled to insure the tubing has the proper inside diameter (ID) and wall thickness. The tubing is then vulcanized in a high pressure autoclave utilizing an exact mandrel to form the inside diameter. Once the tube is cured, the product is ground achieving the desired outside diameter (OD) or wall thickness. The tube is then cut to the desired thickness meeting your exacting tolerances.

 

  • Lathe Cut parts are an economical alternative to die cut or molded seals, washers and gaskets. With low minimums and a large library of Inside Diameter (ID) and Outside Diameter (OD) tooling, we can do most jobs with minimal or no set-up or tooling charges.

 

  • An excellent method to manufacture odd thicknesses. S&H Rubber’s lathe cutting services can be useful when combined with value-added services such as grinding - to achieve tight tolerance products. Lathe cutting is also ideal for fast turn-around prototype parts or short run production.

 

  • Cold Splicing

    Simply a matter of gluing two or more pieces of a seal together using quick-setting glue such as cyano-acrylate or super glue. Generally, cold splicing is less expensive depending on the complexity of the cross section and design of the seal. It is faster and usually a little stronger; however, it is a great deal more unsightly and can be brittle. The seal will also have different properties than the sealed material. There are few, if any, tooling costs.

 

  • Hot Splicing

    Considered to be the industry standard and is most desirable when cosmetics are a concern. The glue used in hot splicing is rubber-based and has to be cured, or vulcanized, in place. This creates a splice that has reasonable strength, retains a lot of the properties of the seal itself and is not nearly as noticeable. The process may take longer than cold splicing depending on the cross section. This process requires some tooling costs for the curing process; therefore, it is also a little more expensive.

 

  • Injection Splicing

    Works similar to injection molding. A mold is created so that two or more pieces of a seal can be inserted into the tooling. A polymer is then injected or transferred into the mold cavity, adhering the ends of the seal and creating a continuous o-ring or multi-sided gasket. The process allows for much greater detail work on the seal, and it generally produces a splice that is very aesthetically pleasing. It is the slowest and most expensive of the three splicing techniques. This method often requires significant tooling, which can also be expensive.

S&H Rubber. specializes in precision die cutting of washers, gaskets and diaphragms with the ability to hold +/-.005 (five thousandth) on critical dimensions.

We manufacture simple O.D./I.D. washers and gaskets to custom shapes and complex configurations. We manufacture gaskets and from most non-metallic materials including rubber, sponge, paper, plasitc and foam. Our extensive tooling inventory and in-house die department means rapid turn around for you. S&H Rubber meets precision tolerancing by manufacturing our own dies. We have a full machine shop for quick turn-around and precision tooling.
